E-cigarettes do not help to quit smoking

Many people believe that switching to e-cigarettes can help them quit smoking. However, researchers at the University of Michigan, USA, after analyzing the data of thousands of teenagers over two decades, found that this is not the case.

As part of the study, scientists compared survey data on smoking habits of 800,000 American schoolchildren collected between 1997 and 2020. The questionnaires recorded whether the teenagers had ever smoked, whether they had tried to quit smoking and whether they had been successful in these attempts.

The results showed that success rates have improved over the past decade, but this trend has changed in 2020. The failure rate jumped to 2.2% in 2020 from 1.3% a year earlier. Analyzing the figures for e-cigarettes only, the researchers stated that 4.1% of attempts to quit this type of cigarette were unsuccessful.

Lead author Dr. Richard Meech said the findings are important given the growing popularity of vaping and e-cigarettes.

Many experts disagree with this study

Many experts believe that the results of the new study are very controversial. They say that at the moment there are many other works that show more convincing evidence that such gadgets help people quit the addiction.

In some countries, such as the UK, e-cigarettes are already being considered as a means of quitting smoking. Probably, in the future, doctors will recommend people with a high risk of various diseases.
